Floreana was one of the first inhabited islands and has a famous past with a penal colony, whaling, and a German couple creating a Garden of Eden. More people arrived and then everyone disappeared resulting in a top true crime mystery. The highlands are remote and of historical interest and snorkelling with colourful, tropical fish in the surrounding waters is superb.

Two beaches separated by a tuff cone offer different wildlife; the flour beach is a turtle nesting site and the green olivine beach is dominated by sealions and ghost crabs. Pink flamingos often stand in the beautiful lagoon that is a short walk from the beaches.

Devil’s Crown is the most exciting snorkelling site in Galapagós as the only access into the crater is by diving or snorkelling in the currents, amongst the beautifully colourful fish.

Here, you drop off the panga into a world of fish, with turtle, sealions, rays and sharks turning up too. But it is the sheer quantity and beauty of the fish that is never forgotten.

The oldest postal system in the world can be found on the northern coast and is still used today; travellers collect and leave postcards in the Post Office Barrel. Cactus-rich islets and mangroves, viewed from the panga, is the environment for boobies, rays, penguins and turtles.

The panga-ride brings you to a mangrove setting where you will be amongst boobies, penguins, turtles and rays. Take a short walk from a small white sand beach to a viewpoint of silvery santo trees and beyond, of rays and turtles in the lagoon.

The journey takes you from the port of Puerto Velasco, through the dry lowlands to the contrasting highlands, full of orange and grapefruit trees. A series of caves can be explored and you can tour the giant tortoise breeding programme, with about 30 living in captivity.
